Post Session: Markets end at strong note; Sensex surges 610 pts; metal, oil&gas stocks up 2%

The Indian equities ended on robust note amid broad-based buying on Monday, tracking firm cues from Asian peers, led by strong buying in index heavyweights such as ONGC, IOC, HPCL, Bharti Airtel, NTPC, ITC, Tata Motors and Tata Steel. All the thirteen sectoral indices ended in green, while metal and oil&gas stocks emerged as top gainers on BSE, rising as much as 2.32 per cent and 2.13 per cent, respectively. The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was flat. On BSE out of total shares traded 3088, shares advanced were 1469, while 1443 shares declined, and 176 were unchanged.

The 30-share benchmark index closed at 33917.94, up by 610.8 points or by 1.83 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 10421.4, up by 194.55 points or by 1.9 per cent.

In line with benchmark indices, the broader markets also witnessed buying, with MIDCAP and SMLCAP indices rising as much as 0.76 per cent and 0.56 per cent, respectively.

During the day’s trade, the Sensex touched intraday high of 33962.48 and intraday low of 33468.16, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10433.65 and intraday low of 10295.45. The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 420.75,+4.68%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 171.00,+4.33%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 270.00,+4.09%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 352.20,+3.07%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 622.70,+2.82%), among others.

On the flip side, Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 297.80,-2.26%), State Bank of India (Rs. 252.85,-0.12%), were among top losers on BSE.
