Post Session: Realty, metal and bank stocks propel Sensex, Nifty to close at fresh lifetime high

Indian benchmark indices continued gaining streak on Thursday and closed at record high amid sustained buying by domestic and foreign investors while rally in realty, metal and banking space also boosted market sentiment. Also, strong cues from global markets and healthy corporate earnings report also injected positivity in the market.

The 30-share benchmark index Sensex crossed the key 38,000 level for the first time ever and closed trade at 38024.37, up by 136.81 points or by 0.36 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 11470.7, up by 20.7 points or by 0.18 per cent.

During the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 38076.23 and intraday low of 37939.28, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11495.2 and intraday low of 11454.1.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 332.95,+4.64%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 619.45,+3.86%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 230.50,+2.56%), State Bank of India (Rs. 316.45,+2.53%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 192.75,+1.69%), among others.

On the flip side, Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 366.75,-4.64%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 168.90,-1.75%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1277.70,-0.98%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1984.25,-0.90%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1286.35,-0.88%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, realty and metal stocks were among top gainers on BSE, rising as much as 2.39 per cent and 1.37 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was flat. On BSE out of total shares traded 3006, shares advanced were 1435, while 1412 shares declined, and 159 were unchanged.
