Post-Session: Sensex ends over 160 pts higher, Nifty at 11,643

Indian benchmark indices ended in green over 160 points on Friday amid recovery in Asian markets and oil prices, supported by buying in FMCG stocks. Shares of IT major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys ended flat ahead of their March quarter earnings to be released later today. Oil prices were firm on Friday, supported by ongoing supply cuts led by producer club OPEC and by US sanctions on petroleum exporters Iran and Venezuela.

Among individual stocks, shares of ITC hit over a six-month high in the intra-day trade, extending its previous day’s 1 per cent gain, on the back of heavy volumes on the BSE. The stock ended at Rs 305.60 apiece, up 3 per cent. Also, shares of SpiceJet surged 10 per cent to Rs 111 on Friday, gaining 18 per cent in the past two trading days after the company said it will induct 16 Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft on dry lease. The company has applied to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for a no objection certificate (NOC) to import the aircraft. Shares, eventually closed at Rs 110, up nearly 9 per cent.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 38767.11 up by 160.1 points or by 0.41 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 11643.45 up by 46.75 points or by 0.4 per cent. During the day’s trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 38818.87 and intraday low of 38554.79 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11657.35 and intraday low of 11578.8.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 305.60,+3.14%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 7332.15,+2.13%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 764.15,+1.61%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 183.90,+1.43%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2640.05,+1.43%), among others. Whereas, the top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 341.55,-1.71%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 3007.10,-1.37%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1361.05,-1.22%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 215.85,-1.08%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1728.30,-0.72%), among others.

Among the sectors, FMCG index was at 11879.53 up by 199.91 points or by 1.71%. Kwality Ltd. (Rs. 6.66,+9.90%), Gillette India Ltd. (Rs. 7298.40,+5.24%), Ruchi Soya Industries Ltd. (Rs. 7.34,+5.16%), Prabhat Dairy Ltd. (Rs. 82.05,+4.99%), Jyothy Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 192.25,+3.42%),. On the flip side, CGS index was at 18370.47 down by -82.41 points or by -0.45%. Finolex Cables Ltd. (Rs. 471.10,-2.42%), CG Power and Industrial Solutions Ltd. (Rs. 39.00,-2.01%), SKF India Ltd. (Rs. 2084.95,-1.91%), Graphite India Ltd. (Rs. 454.10,-1.27%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1361.05,-1.22%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2910, shares advanced were 1478 while 1241 shares declined and 191 were unchanged.
