Post Session: Sensex ends 166 points higher lifted by bank and metal stocks

The Indian benchmark indices rose for a third straight session on Tuesday, added another 166 points on the back of strong buying in banking, metal and energy stocks amid positive global cues. Among the sectors, buying was seen in the auto, IT and infra, while FMCG ended marginally lower. In Asia, Shanghai Composite Index rallied 2.58 per cent, Hang Seng ended 0.76 per cent higher, Nikkei rose 0.33 per cent and Kospi gained 0.59 per cent. Bourses in Europe were also trading higher in their early deals. On the currency front, the Indian rupee appreciated 21 paise to 69.44 against the US dollar. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell marginally to USD 62.24 per barrel. Among individual stocks, Dish TV extended gain to over 12 per cent.

The 30-share index settled at 39950.46 up by 165.94 points or by 0.42 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11965.6 up by 42.9 points or by 0.36 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 40066.31 and intraday low of 39760.02 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 12000.35 and intraday low of 11904.35.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 84.60,+4.38%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 170.65,+2.71%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 169.00,+2.58%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 139.30,+2.50%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1587.25,+2.39%), among others. On the other hand, the top losers of the BSE Sensex were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 389.80,-3.00%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 638.20,-1.38%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1524.70,-0.49%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 258.75,-0.48%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1841.75,-0.41%), among others.

Among sectors, Metal index was at 10969.88 up by 144.25 points or by 1.33%. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 162.10,+3.55%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 107.70,+3.46%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 49.55,+2.69%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 273.30,+2.36%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 169.25,+2.30%),. On the flip side, CGS index was at 19687.3 down by -10.51 points or by -0.05%. Dilip Buildcon Ltd. (Rs. 444.95,-3.07%), Carborundum Universal Ltd. (Rs. 359.25,-2.35%), Elgi Equipments Ltd. (Rs. 263.05,-2.32%), ABB India Ltd. (Rs. 1550.00,-1.07%), Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd. (Rs. 5347.00,-0.71%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2958 , shares advanced were 1270 while 1503 shares declined and 185 were unchanged.
