Post-Session: Sensex recovers 693 pts amid govt measures to aid coronavirus-hit economy

A day after the historic rout, equity benchmark Sensex bounced back to close 693 points higher on Tuesday as investors noted governments across the world taking prompt economic measures to offset the financial damage from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Indian equities followed an improved investor sentiment in Asia after the Federal Reserve announced limitless bond-buying programme to support the US economy.

Meanwhile, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said an economic package to help through the coronavirus lockdown was in works even as fresh cases of virus spread reported from various parts of the country.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 26674.03 up by 692.79 points or by 2.67 % and then NSE Nifty was at 7801.05 up by 190.8 points or by 2.51 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 27462.87 and intraday low of 25638.9 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8036.95 and intraday low of 7511.1 The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 593.55,+12.69%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 2485.80,+9.78%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2028.75,+8.34%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 4528.05,+7.48%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 446.40,+6.86%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 269.25,-8.32%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 312.35,-7.19%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 149.45,-3.21%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 148.45,-2.85%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 708.30,-2.13%), among others.

TECk index was at 5973.81 up by 328.16 points or by 5.81%. PVR Ltd. (Rs. 1367.40,+13.33%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 593.55,+12.69%), MindTree Ltd. (Rs. 792.80,+8.24%), Larsen & Toubro Infotech Ltd. (Rs. 1385.00,+7.09%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 446.40,+6.86%),.

Realty index was at 1321.14 down by -27.11 points or by -2.01%. Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 542.95,-5.80%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 40.75,-4.90%), Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 1.36,-4.90%), Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 144.45,-4.43%), Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd. (Rs. 200.20,-4.26%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2643 , shares advanced were 1005 while 1464 shares declined and 174 were unchanged.
