Pre-Session: SGX Nifty indicates negative start for Sensex Nifty

Domestic bourses are expected to start the day in red on Thursday. Investors may today react to report that the Indian government is likely to agree on a stimulus package in the range of Rs 1.5 - 2.3 trillion to contain the downturn in the economy due to coronavirus (Covid-19).

Moreover, the March series derivative contracts expire today so the session is also likely to be volatile.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 28535.78 up by 1861.75 points or by 6.98 % and then NSE Nifty was at 8317.85 up by 516.8 points or by 6.62 %. On the global front, In the US, the main indices rallied for a second straight session as the US Senate appeared near a vote on a $2 trillion package to support businesses and households devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Wall Street trimmed hefty gains late in the session after reports raised doubts about how quickly the bill might pass, although the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average still ended up more than 1 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively.

Asian stock markets made a cautious start on Thursday as many investors remained reluctant to call an end to global market’s recent, staggering selloff.

Australia’s ASX 200 index rose 1.5 per cent while Japan’s Nikkei fell 2.2 per cent. Hong Kong futures were 1 per cent higher and China A50 futures were up 0.2 per cent. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.3 per cent.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 696367 with a total turnover of Rs. 34786.13 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1729155 with a total turnover of Rs. 72269.72 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 10959818 with a total turnover of Rs. 557336.00 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 337097 with a total turnover of Rs. 16948.36 Crore.

The FIIs on 24/03/2020 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 5767.26 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 2032.28 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 8407.39 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 3601.14 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -2640.13 Crore and Rs. -1568.86
